Fosamax is a drug prescribed to help prevent and treat osteoporosis.  It is most widely used by post-menopausal women on hormone replacement therapy, but there are risks.

The FDA has found that atypical fractures of the femur have become common in women who have taken Fosamax, or the generic versions, for an extended amount of time. These fractures happen suddenly and often occur just below the hip.

The FDA felt so strongly about the risks associated with this drug that they required Merck, the makers of Fosamax, to clearly state a risk of atypical subtrochanteric fractures on the warning label.  Merck strengthened the Fosamax warning December 2011 and January 2012.  Unfortunately for some, it was too late.
