Women who have trouble becoming pregnant often turn to their physicians for help. One of the more common solutions is a drug called Clomid®, the brand name for clomiphine citrate. This medication is prescribed for several different fertility problems. Unfortunately, it is not without serious side effects.

Clomid® is a fertility drug which doctors commonly prescribe for to treat fertility issues, including the following:

  • Issues with ovulation that may include women who either don’t ovulate regularly or don’t ovulate at all.
  • Clomid is said to sometimes help increase the potential for a woman to conceive by producing higher quality eggs.
  • When a couple has attempted to conceive for months with no success and no known cause for infertility, doctors may prescribe Clomid to increase their chances of conceiving.

Clomid signals the pituitary gland to increase its production of the hormones that are responsible for ovulation. In approximately ten percent of cases, the use of Clomid and the resulting stimulation leads to multiple births. There are some associated side effects with the medication such as hot flashes, breast tenderness, and mood swings, but the big concern is the potential for the unborn child to suffer from serious birth defects.

Association between Clomid and birth defects.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has labeled Clomid a "Category X" drug. This is the highest-level pregnancy risk assigned to a drug, and means there is some evidence it can cause birth defects if it is taken during pregnancy. The evidence has appeared in testing performed on animals because these experiments are much too dangerous to perform on humans. However, the general consensus is if a particular medication causes birth defects in animals, it likely has the same effect in humans.

These test results occur when Clomid is given while the lab animals are pregnant, but since it is given to humans as a medication to treat infertility, an already-pregnant woman should not be taking the drug. Generally, a pregnant woman would only be exposed to Clomid if she didn’t realize she had already conceived, and even then, doctors should immediately advise the expectant mother to stop taking the drug.

Since many women who take the medication are already in a high-risk category for giving birth to children with birth defects, it can sometimes be difficult to determine if the medication is really the cause. One of the largest groups of women who take Clomid are those over the age of 35 who have trouble conceiving, but this group is also at a higher-risk for giving birth to a child with birth defects. Our attorneys are happy to look into the facts of your case for no charge, and inform you of the options available to you.

The most common birth defects associated with the use of Clomid are:

  • Down syndrome
  • Stillbirth
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Club foot
  • Cerebral palsy

The facts surrounding Clomid and it's relationship to certain birth defects are complex. Lawsuits involving dangerous prescription drugs can be very difficult to investigate, but our Dallas attorneys have the experience needed to evaluate the strength of your case and explain exactly what options you have moving forward.
