Accutane® (and its generic version Isotretinoin) is a popular medication for the treatment of moderate to severe acne breakouts. Unfortunately, there are a number of serious side effects that patients may suffer from after using this medication, including inflammatory bowel disease.
Anyone who has taken Accutane and suspects that he or she may be suffering a serious side effect should contact Rasansky Law Firm at (214) 651-6100 for a free assessment in order to determine whether you may be entitled to compensation.
Roche Holding AG, a Swiss drug manufacturer, first released Accutane® in the United States in 1982. It was intended as a treatment for severe cases of acne. Unfortunately, there have been a number of cases of severe, life-threatening complications that forced the pharmaceutical company to conduct a recall of Accutane in the U.S. market back in 2009.
There have been several notable personal injury lawsuits against the maker of Accutane. On July 2, 2012 a jury in New Jersey a jury awarded two women $18 million in their Accutane lawsuit. This lawsuit was the result of Roche’s failure to effectively warn the women the drug could case ulcerative colitis. This lack of disclosure led to the women succumbing to the effects of a permanent debilitating inflammatory bowel disease. On March 12, 2014 Roche was ordered to pay $1.5 million to a Utah resident who was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease after using Accutane.
Another woman was granted an award of $10.5 million after she developed IBD at the age of 14 following her two-year use of Accutane. In 2010 a man was awarded $25 million after he had to undergo five surgeries. These surgeries were directed related to his use of Accutane for several years and ultimate development of IBD.
The results of recent studies indicate that those who use Accutane on a continuous basis run the risk of developing potentially fatal side effects from the drug. Some of the side effects a user might suffer include but are definitely not limited to the following:
At least 7,000 lawsuits have been filed against the drug manufacturer for injuries related to the use of Accutane. Most of these cases are centrally based in state or federal jurisdiction, but the litigation is not considered a class action lawsuit. Rather, each individual has filed his or her own lawsuit. This allows legal counsel to provide each client with the maximum financial compensation. The extent of the complications vary from user to user, and even with the lack of any class action lawsuit, those who develop these side effects need to be aware of their rights.
