Losing a loved one in a fatal truck crash can be devastating. Unfortunately, hundreds of victims die as a result of these accidents annually. In 2021 alone, truck accidents in Texas took the lives of more than 1200 people. These crashes account for more than 25% of all fatal traffic accidents reported in our state annually.
Like other types of accidents, fatal truck accidents are often caused by drivers who are negligent. Several factors are commonly reported in these accidents. These include:
Fatigue: When truck drivers are in a rush to reach their destinations, they are likely to spend excessive hours on the road. Even though we have strict laws in place to prevent drivers from exceeding the allowed number of hours on the road each day, we continue to see truck drivers do so. As a result, more and more truck accidents are reported due to drivers who fall asleep while operating their vehicles.
Speeding: Speeding is another common factor in accidents in our state. Speeding in any vehicle can be incredibly dangerous. However, when speeding in a vehicle that can weigh more than 80,000 pounds, the results of a collision can be disastrous. Unfortunately, speeding increases the likelihood of drivers losing control of their vehicles.
Distractions: Given the dramatic increase in technology, we see more people utilize it while behind the wheel. Many truck crashes are caused by drivers who are talking on CB radios, changing their navigation system, or using their phones to talk or text.
