This month, we covered the story of a serious Texas truck accident that took place on the Dallas North Tollway on February 23. The big-rig crash occurred when an 18-wheeler suddenly crossed three lanes of traffic, pushed a vehicle into the median and incoming traffic, and flipped on top of a second vehicle. Two people were seriously injured. An investigation revealed that the commercial truck accident was caused by speeding.
Speeding is far too common a violation for commercial truckers – and speeding trucks can cause significantly more damage than other vehicles because of their weight and size. What are the most common causes of speeding trucks?

• Pressure from trucking companies. Many truckers are on tight deadlines and some can make more money if they travel faster than others. The speeding truck you see may be rushing to complete a job – and endangering others.
• Distracted or inattentive driving. Truckers are behind the wheel for long hours at a time. Driving so much can lead to road hypnosis, in which you are not focused on driving, or are driving distracted.
• Mechanical issues. Be aware when you are traveling on roads with steep downgrades – this is the time most likely for trucks to suffer from brake issues that cause their big-rig to speed out of control.
• Reckless drivers. Unfortunately, some truck drivers are simply taking the law – and the safety of others – into their own hands. Some truckers may drive carelessly, recklessly, or aggressively for little reason, while others could be under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol.
