Nursing Home Fires

Accidents happen all the time. However, many accidents can be attributed to a the actions or negligence of another person, employee, or company.
When a fire causes death or severe injury to a nursing home resident, one must conduct a thorough investigation to find out who was liable in the accident. This is essential in order to determine how victims will be able to get the compensation and justice they deserve following such a tragic incident.
A fire which razed through a Quebec nursing home early last year, killing more than 30 seniors, brought to light the level of negligence that any fear may be prevalent in North America when it comes to keeping nursing home residents safe.
There are many nursing home fires reported every year. We've mentioned a few of the deadliest, below:

  • In 1979, a blaze that started in the night in a Missouri nursing home led to the death of more than 25 residents.
  • In February of 2003, 16 people died when a mentally disabled woman set fire to a nursing home in Harford, Connecticut, killing 16 seniors. The nursing home allegedly had no sprinkler system.
  • In November of 2006, 11 people lost their lives in a fire that erupted at the Anderson Guest House in Missouri. This nursing home also didn’t have sprinkler systems despite it having smoke alarms.
  • In January of 2014, 32 people were killed in a fire at the L’Isle-Verte, Que., retirement home in Quebec, Canada. This nursing home was also not required to have a sprinkler system, even though the building was constructed in 1997.

According to the law, nursing homes are required to offer reasonable care to their residents as well as keep them safe in a reasonable manner. The lack of a fire sprinkler system seems like an obvious case of negligence - especially when the facility caters to elderly residents with mobility issues.
If a nursing home facility fails to do the following, you may very likely have a case of nursing home negligence:

  • Ensure that there are fully functional sprinklers that can put out fires in a timely manner before they get out of hand.
  • Restrict smoking in nursing homes. Cigarettes are a common cause of structure fires - especially when it comes to seniors.
  • Place fire extinguishers strategically throughout the building, and ensure that residents know where they are.
  • Holding emergency drills on a regular basis to ensure that residents are always aware of the exits and what to do in case a fire breaks out.

Burn injuries and the elderly.

Lack of Fire Sprinkler System
Lack of Sprinklers is a Problem

A fire can lead to many serious injuries, if not fatalities. Due to the advanced ages of nursing home residents, many are not able to effectively deal with these kinds of injuries, leading to slow healing. As such, medical expenses can run much higher than one might imagine. It is important to have a life care planner determine exactly how much this care may end up costing, as you do not deserve to be left in debt due to someone else's negligence.

Smoke inhalation.

Smoke inhalation is the most common injury reported when it comes to structure fires. Residents who survive these fires may be faced with a lifetime of lung-related problems such as labored breathing and bronchitis due to smoke inhalation. The pain and suffering caused by these types of injuries is unimaginable. You need a law firm on your side who will fight for every penny your loved one deserves.
