Daycare Abuse Long-Term Effects

After the initial shock, anger, and sadness felt by the parents of children who have been abused or neglected in a daycare environment, they often have one important question on their mind: how will this abuse affect my child in the long term?
There is no one answer to this question. The long-term consequences of Texas daycare abuse and neglectdepends on a number of factors:

  • The severity and the frequency of the abuse and/or neglect.
  • The age and maturity of the child at the time of the incident or incidents.
  • The nature of the abuse.
  • The child’s disposition and reaction to the abuse.

With these factors in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the possible affects of child abuse in general:

  • Physical health issues. Bruises fade and broken bones heal, but many children who are severely physically abused will carry health problems with them for years after they are saved from a dangerous environment. Possible medical issues include shaken baby syndrome, physical deformities, permanent scarring, impaired brain development, and other disabilities. One study has even found that adults with a history of child abuse and neglect were more likely to suffer from a range of ailments, including asthma, high blood pressure, ulcers, and allergies.
  • Emotional and psychological health issues. Even if physical wounds are temporary, the pain, suffering, and trauma of a child abuse event could endure. One shocking study found that 80 percent of 21-year-olds with a history of abuse had a mental illness – including depression, anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress, disorder, and ADHD. Many children require therapy after abuse and neglect incidents, and some children may not display signs of emotional trauma until they are teens.
  • Behavioral health issues. A significant number of children with a history of abuse and neglect will show behavioral effects – some shortly after the abuse occurs and some only as they age. Pre-teens and teens who suffered abuse may be at risk for drug and alcohol abuse, criminal behavior, teen pregnancy, trouble in school, and overly risky behavior. In addition, abused kids are more likely to become abusers themselves.

It is important to understand that the person or entity responsible for your child’s daycare abuse take responsibility both for the immediate and long-term consequences of the abuse.
