Support for Texas Parents of Children with Cerebral Palsy

If you are the parent or guardian of a child with cerebral palsy, you’ve probably read dozens of articles about how best to care for and support your child. However, you might not have read about how important it is to give yourself the care, support, and time you need to be the most effective caregiver possible.

  • Don’t forget about self-care. To give your child the best, you have to be at your best. This means taking time to relax – even if it’s just for five minutes – making sure to eat enough and get enough sleep, and making time for exercise and quiet time. It isn’t selfish to take time for yourself: it is absolutely mandatory if you want to stray mentally and physically strong.
  • Nurture your other relationships. Some parents make the mistake of focusing fully on their child with CP and pushing aside relationship with other loved ones. While it may be true that your unwell child requires more care, it can be detrimental in the long term if you don’t make one-on-one time with your spouse, your other children, and your loved ones.
  • Keep one hobby or activity that is all about you. Whether you like to write or draw, whether you like to run or play tennis, whether you like to knit or build models, it is key to have something of your own to return to during quiet times or times of stress. Make this time a priority, even if you can’t fit it in as often as you’d like.
  • Build a support system of people who understand. It is key that you have people to speak with who truly understand where you are coming from. Connect with other parents of kids with cerebral palsy, check out local CP resources, and reach out online. No one can lend a caring ear better than another person in your position.
  • Ask for help. If you are feeling depressed or anxious about your situation, ask for help. If you are exhausted or feel hopeless, ask for help. If you need a night out with your spouse or a night away from childcare, ask for help. You have a big job, and the people who love you want to lend a hand. While it’s important to be strong, part of being strong is knowing when you can’t do it alone.

Raising a child with cerebral palsy is a challenge that tests even the strongest, surest parents. It is vital that you understand the importance of self-care and support – both for your health and the health of your family.
