Broken Bones at Birth

Did your newborn child suffer from a bone fracture during the delivery process? Call our law firm today at (214) 651-6100.

Although light bruising is a normal occurrence during delivery, fractures and broken bones are usually indicative that something went wrong. These types of birth injuries often result from some type of medical malpractice.

Newborn Bone Fractures
Infant Bone Fractures During Delivery

In most cases, fractures and broken bones that occur during the delivery process are preventable as long as medical personnel exercises proper care during labor and delivery. One of the best available preventable measures is the monitoring of fetal and/or maternal distress signals during delivery. Unfortunately, most infant bone fractures occur during the late stages of labor, and are caused by things such as breech birth, forceps-assisted delivery, vacuum-assisted delivery, or even inexperienced medical staff who forcefully pull on the baby when there is no need to do so.

Young bones do not heal as easily as adult bones do, so it is essential for parents and caregivers to be proactive when it comes to infant fractures. If these bones do not heal properly, it can lead to permanent disability and limited functionality. Our birth injury attorneys know that this can lead to future expenses down the line, and we will fight to get you every penny that you and your child deserve.

Identifying bone fractures in newborn children.

While it can sometimes be difficult to detect broken bones in infants, your doctor should be able to make this determination very soon after delivery. Some of the most common signs of broken bones in infants include the following:

  • Swollen area surrounding the broken bone
  • Obvious signs of being in pain such as consistent crying
  • Lack of ability to move the limb that is broken

The Nationwide Children’s Hospital stated that the most-common birth injuries are fractures of the clavicle (collarbone). This usually occurs after a stressful delivery. The most common symptoms of this type of fracture include the following:

  • The infant cries whenever anyone touches or moves the injured area
  • There is little or no movement in the area of the injury usually involving the arm on the side where the fracture occurred
  • The shoulder may appear to droop and be lower on the side of the fracture compared to the other side
  • The presence of a lump in the affected area may be noticeable a few weeks after the injury

Fractures that involve an arm or leg usually present any number of the following symptoms:

  • Pain, swelling, redness, and bruising localized around the fracture
  • Inability to move the limb that was injured
  • Recognizable deformity in the area of the injury
