Zipcar is a new concept in car ownership/use. The key issue of importance is that of short-term car rental—the basis behind Zipcar. While there are currently Zipcar locations at UTD and SMU, the service is set to start in other DFW locations in the summer of 2014.
Several DFW neighborhoods have been selected for the introduction to Zipcar: downtown Dallas, the Arts District, Oak Lawn, Mockingbird Station, and Uptown Dallas.
While the rideshare service sounds like a good idea at first glance, this type of program has some disadvantages as well. We've found that many people complain that Zipcar drivers are the worst drivers on the road. Issues of insurance coverage are a common concern. The average insurance coverage that Zipcar drivers carry may be insufficient in the case of a serious accident. The driver of the Zipcar can purchase an additional insurance policy that will pick up where the Zipcar policy leaves off. Unfortunately, it's uncommon for Zipcar drivers to carry this additional coverage.
