While many vehicle accidents happen so fast that no one could possibly react to them before they're over, there are some that actually take a bit of time. A Dallas car accident that involves a slide, for instance, may take a few seconds as the car heads toward the ditch or a fixed object. There are things you can do during this time to try to minimize the damage.
When the back of your vehicle passes the front of the vehicle, you're in real trouble. There are plenty of ways you could put how to avoid this into writing, but you need to actually practice dealing with skids and slides before you'll get the hang of it. Taking a defensive driving class is a great way to learn about this. It may also lower your insurance bills, which is a relief whether or not you ever need the skills you learn in class. The most important thing to remember is that, if you don't have anti-lock brakes, you shouldn't slam the brake pedal to the floor. Hit the brakes firmly, but don’t lock them up.
In some cases, people will panic and forget that they have a full second or more to slow down before they lose control. Before you do anything else, reduce your speed, if possible. The slower you're going the more control you have over the vehicle. Take your foot off of the gas and hit the brake pedal. If you have a manual transmission, you can also use your gears to reduce your speed, if need be. Even if you do collide with something, it's much better if you reduce your speed, even a little bit, before you do.
Don’t fixate on any object you're about to hit. When you look at something when you're driving, you tend to head right toward it. Look toward an escape route. An escape route can be the median, the shoulder of the road or another road that spurs off from a fixed object. Concentrate on the escape route, not what you're worried about hitting.
If someone causes you to get into a wreck because of their negligence, be sure to contact a vehicle accident lawyer about the matter. You may be able to recover damages by seeking a jury award or settlement.
