According to a local news station, the accident took place at eight in the morning on Wednesday. Witnesses say that one car was stopped for the construction worker when a quickly approaching car swerved to miss the stopped vehicle and instead slammed into the construction worker, who was holding a stop sign. The worker, 23-year-old Michael Lorie of Jasper was thrown 25 feet and died at the scene of the traffic accident. The driver of the car, 29-year-old David Lee Williams of Buna, was not seriously injured in the wreck. Charges are expected to be filed against Williams, though not until the crash is investigated further.
These construction zone traffic accidents are far too common in Texas. Drivers absolutely need to slow down, be prepared to stop, and be aware that construction workers will be on foot in the area whether or not they believe the construction zone is active.
