Not only does proper maintenance protect you from having something go wrong while you're driving, it could also help you deal with situations where other drivers cause hazards. Here are some areas of your vehicle to have checked on a regular basis. Your owner's manual for your car will provide much more information.
Vehicle brakes come in two basic types as far as your driving experience is concerned. Your car will either have anti-lock brakes or it won't. If it doesn't, having your brakes lock up when you're stopping suddenly is a real hazard. You'll have to learn how to stop without slamming on your brakes and skidding, in which case you have no control over your car.
Your brakes need to be checked whenever they start making noise, in addition to at the regularly scheduled maintenance intervals. If you notice that your brakes aren't performing as you think they should be, get them checked just to be sure.
Make sure you have your lights checked whenever you go in for maintenance. Most of the time, mechanics will do this, but it never hurts to ask. If your vehicle has dim stock headlights, you may want to consider upgrading. There are excellent aftermarket headlights available these days which are very affordable.
Your windshield washer reservoir needs to be filled whenever it gets low (at minimum, every oil change). A dirty windshield can blind you, particularly at night when you're facing another car's headlights. Make sure your wiper blades are in good repair, and always repair any cracks in the glass (which is often covered by insurance with no deductible required).
Your tires are vital to being safe on the road. Have them rotated at the manufacturer's recommended schedule and be sure you check the air pressure in them often. Having your tires over or under-inflated can cause car wrecks, as it changes the handling characteristics of your vehicle.
