At about 9:15 a.m. a 69-year-old man collided with the rear of a 24-year-old expecting mother on Walnut Hill Lane. The unidentified woman was taken to Presbyterian Hospital where she tragically gave birth to a stillborn fetus. Physicians said the baby died as a result of the blunt force trauma from the auto accident.
While no arrest has been made, police have indicated charges may be filed against the man.
While more specific details have not yet been released, it appears this is yet another instance of distracted driving costing someone a life, in this case, an unborn child. There is a mother who will have to live with the tragic loss of her baby and man who now has to face the fact that his irresponsible driving cost a life before it began and may have wrecked the life of another.
In many cases, distracted driving involves cell phones, and more specifically, text messaging. Some may read this story and think because it was a 69-year-old man, texting is not a possible cause. This is a misconception about cell phone use behind the wheel.
A common belief is that texting while driving is a problem caused by teens and young drivers, but studies have shown this to be false. Older drivers text as much or more while driving. Distracted driving is not just a problem for our youth, but a national epidemic that kills motorists ever day.
It is important to remember how dangerous driving truly is. There are enough hazards on our roads; there is no reason to make driving tougher than it already is. If you feel that you must use your cell phone, pull over to a safe place before using it. The life you save may not only be one that hasn't even started yet, but could also be your own. Remember - It can wait.
