Many of the drivers on the Texas roads only carry the state minimum insurance. State minimum insurance will provide you with adequate protection if you happen to be in a relatively minor accident with a vehicle that isn't particularly expensive. The minimum amounts of coverage, however, can run out quickly if you end up in a wreck with a very expensive vehicle or if you end up causing a lot of bodily harm to the other people involved in the wreck.
Aside from liability insurance, there are many other products that auto insurance companies offer their clients. One of these products is called comprehensive insurance. This insurance does exactly what the name implies: it covers just about every type of damage you can imagine (if they can't find a way to deny your claim). While walking away from an accident without being hurt or killed is always something to be grateful for, there is oftentimes a great deal of financial damage that comes after an accident, and it can cause a lot of stress in people's lives. For example, many people would not be able to make it to work at all if they did not have a vehicle.
Collision insurance will generally cover damage to your vehicle. This ensures that you're not left without a vehicle if you're in a bad wreck. Remember that your state liability insurance will not cover your vehicle; only damage to the other party’s vehicle and the medical expenses to the people involved in the wreck. If you want the greatest possible amount of protection, talk to your insurance company about comprehensive coverage.
At the very least, you’ll want to make sure that you have collision coverage that covers your own vehicle and your own medical expenses. If you're involved in a wreck, consider contacting a Dallas car accident attorney. A good car accident lawyer can help you get compensated even if the other guy's insurance company is not being cooperative or tries to deny your claim.
Remember that the state minimum insurance requirement is a law and you're required to follow it. At the very least, it ensures that you don't end up in a situation where you've caused a lot of property damage to someone else's vehicle and where you possibly have caused bodily harm to other individuals and you don't have any money to help them pay for the costs of either.
