Port Arthur, TX (June 9, 2023) - Two people were killed, and several were injured after an 18-wheeler lost control on a highway in Port Arthur on Thursday night, June 8.
It was reported that a Dodge Charger and an 18-wheeler collided on TX-73 near W. Port Arthur Road just before midnight. The semi-truck was traveling behind the Dodge when the operator failed to control their speed and crashed into the vehicle. The back of the Charger was significantly damaged, and the truck overturned.
An adult man and woman in the Charger suffered fatal injuries. A teenage boy was transported to a hospital in Houston for treatment. Two other adults were taken to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.
No other injuries were reported in the accident. The truck driver was identified as a Houston man in his 50s.
An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly crash is in progress.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
In 2011, there were no days in Texas without a traffic fatality. Although semi-trucks are not involved in every collision, these crashes commonly result in fatalities due to the size and weight disparity between big rigs and smaller cars. 18-wheelers typically weigh between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds. In Texas, there were 284 fatal truck collisions in 2010, and those who were hurt may be eligible to seek compensation.
