How To Avoid and Prevent Rear-End Car Accidents

Tips on avoiding rear-end car accidents.

Rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of car accidents in Texas – and chances are that the majority of drivers will get rear-ended at some point in their lives. But while many rear-end accidents are nothing more than fender-benders, some result in serious property damages, serious injuries, and even death.
How can you avoid rear-end collisions?

  • Never tailgate. Tailgating is not only illegal, it is also the most common reason that rear-end accidents take place. Tailgating doesn’t allow drivers enough time to react to a car braking in front of them or to stop their car in time to prevent a collision.
  • Keep an eye on what is going on ahead of the car ahead of you, so that you will see potential hazards as they approach.
  • Keep your speed consistent. If you suddenly slow your car down, or drive at erratic speeds, you are increasing the chances that someone else will rear-end your vehicles. Drive the speed limit, and drive in a predictive manner.
  • Make sure both of your brake lights are working. If the car behind you can’t see you brake, they are less likely to know you are slowing down.
  • Tap your brakes before coming to a stop. Gliding to a stop could make it difficult for the car behind you to understand that you are slowing your speed.
  • If you are stopped on the shoulder or stopped in a lane for some other reason, turn on your hazard lights so that approach cars are aware of the situation.
  • Use your turn signals when switching lanes on the highway or interstate.
  • Slow down in poor weather conditions. Snowy, icy, or wet roads can make it take much longer to slow or stop your car.
  • Don’t drive while distracted! Taking your eye off of the road even for a few seconds at a time can cause you to miss a car braking ahead of you.
