How To Prevent Tire Blowout Accidents

There are things you can do to lower your risk of being in an accident caused by a tire blowout.

A flat tire can be much more than just an inconvenience. If you are going high speeds on a highway or interstate at the time of a tire blowout, you could be in danger of causing a serious car accident.
Here are four steps you can take to increase your chances of avoiding a crash after a tire blowout:

  • Never tailgate. Keeping a safe distance from other vehicles is one of the best ways to prevent colliding with another car in the event of a tire blowout.
  • Don’t slam on the brakes. Although it may be a natural reaction to immediately slam on the brakes after a tire blowout, this action can cause you to lose control of your car.
  • Don’t make drastic steering movements. The majority of accidents that follow tire blowouts occur when drivers overcorrect after a tire blowout, lose control of their car, and drive either into another lane or off of the road.
  • Slow the car and counter-steer. Because a tire blowout will throw your car’s trajectory off, it is necessary to slightly counter-steer to keep your car driving straight. After you have regained control, slow the car by taking your foot off the gas and lightly applying the brake.
  • Pull off the road to a safe place. Never stop in a lane of traffic. Pull onto a shoulder and exit the highway. Pull as far off of the road as you can safely manage.
