The beauty of RVs is that you can carry everything that you need right along with you – from your loved ones to your supplies to a place to sleep. But, unfortunately, one of the dangers of RVs is that an overloaded RV is incredibly dangerous.
The heavier a vehicle gets, the more difficult it is to control on hills, brake, and maneuver. At the same time, an RV that is carrying more than its legal maximum capacity is putting stress on its brakes, frame, tires, springs, and axles. An overloaded RV could be in danger of a serious mechanical issue, a tire blowout, or other problem. An overloaded RV is also more difficult to drive up and down hills, around turns, and on challenging roads.
Despite the very real risks associated with driving an RV that is heavier than its maximum weight limit, many RV owners are not aware of what the carrying capacity of their vehicle is or how much cargo they can safety load. It is absolutely vital to know how much your RV weights and how much it can carry.
In addition to the overall weight of your RV, the balance and positioning of that weight is also extremely important. An improperly loaded RV is more likely to rollover, lose control, and become involved in accidents. An RV that is top heavy, for example, may be much more susceptible to high winds and has a significantly higher chance of rollovers in the event of a blown tire of evasive movement.
