Running Out of Gas is Dangerous

Running out of gas can be hazardous to your health!

Earlier this month we covered the story of a Dallas I-35E car accident that took the lives of an infant and a toddler. The wreck took place after the driver of the car ran out of gas and stalled in a travel lane, where the vehicle was struck from behind. This tragedy can teach us all a lesson about the dangers of running out of gas.

  • Running out of gas could leave you in a travel lane. One of the most dangerous places to be is stopped in a lane with a high speed limit. Even with your hazard lights blinking, cars going 60-70 miles per hour many not have time to stop or avoid your vehicle.
  • Running out of gas puts you on busy shoulders. Even if you make it to the shoulder safely, you are still in a dangerous place. Your car could be rear-ended by a distracted or reckless driver, or a pedestrian accident could occur if you leave your vehicle to walk for fuel.
  • Running out of gas could leave you without brakes or power steering. When you run out of gas, your car stops working properly. Power steering is disabled, and your brakes can become unresponsive after 1-2 pumps. Due to this, you often don’t have the luxury of coasting to a safe place.

What’s the best way to avoid running out of gas? Never let your tank get below one-fourth full, and keep an eye on your gas light while driving. Once your light is on, make getting gas your first priority.
