Standing Up to Bad Employers

Any employer is in a unique position of power. Even though labor law is very detailed and ensures that employees have certain rights in the workplace, there are employers out there who use the fact that they hold their employee's financial futures in their hands to exploit those employees in different ways. One of the most common is not paying employees for work they have performed.

How it Happens

There are completely innocent mistakes on the part of employers sometimes. Generally, you can tell this is the case when the employer apologizes for not paying you money that you are due and when they pay you that money on your next check or right on the spot. Most of the time, employees and their employers can work these issues out among themselves and reach a satisfactory agreement. There are cases, however, where an employer will not pay wages to an employee, particularly when those wages are overtime wages and when they are much higher than they would be for regular work.
In such cases, you may want to consider whether or not it is worth it for you to keep working for that employer. If you cannot trust them to pay you for the work that you do and if they keep giving you the runaround about paying you wages that you have earned, it may be time to find another job. Even if you do decide to find another job, however, you shouldn't walk away from the situation without getting the money that you are owed.
An unpaid overtime lawyer can likely help you in one of these situations. They can take a look at what's going on with you and your employer and determine whether or not you are being ripped off by the employer.
Most of these attorneys will work with you on a contingency basis. The first thing they will need to do is set up a free consultation so that they can determine whether or not you have a valid claim and to determine whether or not they are the right attorney to represent you. Because they don't get paid unless they win, these attorneys do not want to take claims that they are likely to lose. Of course, this is good news for you, as it means that your attorney will not even consider taking your claim unless they really do believe they can win it for you. This could have seriously beneficial financial consequences for you.
