Study Finds Disturbing News About Household Cleaners & Breast Cancer

According to a study by the Silent Spring Institute in Massachusetts, women who use certain household cleaners may be at a higher risk of breast cancer than those who do not.
The study was only the beginning of research into this issue and there needs to be more work done before this finding could be considered as fact. There were, however, distressing results that did come from the study.

The study.

The Institute interviewed 787 women between the ages of 60 and 80, according to a press release. All of these women had breast cancer. The study also interviewed 721 women within the same age range who did not have breast cancer.
According to the results of the study, air freshener contributed to a two-fold increase in breast cancer compared to women who did not use it. Weekly use of mold and mildew removers had the same results.
Studies like these come up all the time. Sometimes the results are frightening and, happily, they are sometimes later proven to be wrong. There is no doubt, however, that there are dangerous household chemicals in the homes of most Americans, whether the people who have those chemicals are aware of the dangers or not.

Warning labels.

Most dangerous chemicals are labeled so that consumers are aware of the risks. For example, products that pose a suffocation hazards are usually labeled so that people know to use them in ventilated areas. Products that are flammable are labeled as such as products that pose other hazards carry appropriate warnings, as well. This ensures that consumers are allowed to decide whether or not they want to use a product based on being fully aware of the risks involved. When products aren't labeled, the parties injured sometimes end up filing lawsuits to recover damages.
People who believe that they have been affected by an as-yet unknown hazard posed by a chemical should speak with an attorney. Sometimes, the media picks up on these stories quickly and people are made aware of a product that poses a hazard to them right away. In other cases, however, dangerous products remain on the market for years before anyone manages to get good information out about the hazards they pose.
Texas civil courts provide a way for people to get material compensation for the damages that they've suffered due to dangerous products. In many cases, the damage is not long term, but takes the form of burns, reactions and other issues that sometimes arise in the presence of chemicals.
