A suspected drunk driver killed two people and injured three others when he ran a red light and rear-ended an SUV carrying five people.
The Oak Cliff DUI accident occurred at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 31, at the intersection of West Davis Street and North Gilpin Avenue. A GMC Terrain had stopped at a traffic light in the 3700 block of West Davis Street when a Hyundai Santa Fe traveling at a high rate of speed ran the stop light and crashed into the GMC.
There were four adults and a toddler in the vehicle. Fifty-five-year-old John Wilkins and 57-year-old Jeanette Wilkins died at the scene of the crash. The remaining occupants sustained injuries. One of the occupants was a pregnant woman whose leg was reportedly severed in the crash.
The driver of the Hyundai sustained only minor injuries and was treated and then released. He has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault.
In 2010, 10,228 lives were lost to drivers under the influence of alcohol. Thousands more were injured, and families and friends are left suffering because another person, often a stranger, made a bad choice. It just isn’t fair.
