Bumbo Baby Seat Recall Comes After Infant Injury Lawsuits

Bumbo baby seat recall.

In October 2007, South African country Bumbo International Trust issued a voluntary recall of their molded plastic baby seats. In the five years that followed, at least 50 more injury incidents were reported in the United States, 19 involving skull fractures that took place when babies fell from the seats onto a hard surface, such as a floor or counter top. Other injuries consisted of bumps and bruises.

After a number of these serious baby injuries were reported and injury lawsuits were filed, Bumbo International issued a 4 million baby seat recall on August 15 with the assistance of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The seats, which are made of molded foam and which come in a variety of colors, were sold between August 2003 and August 2012, at a variety of stores including Sears, Target, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, Babies R Us, USA Babies, and Amazon. They retailed for between $30 and $50.
Those who own the Bumbo baby seat should stop using the product immediately and call to request a free repair kit that ads a safety restraint to the seat to prevent falls. Users should install the new restraint according to instructions and place the new warning sticker on the seat. The seat should never be placed on a raised surface, such as a table or counter top. Repair kits can be ordered online or by calling (866) 898-4999.
A number of Texas product liability lawsuits have been filed against the baby product company following falls and skull fractures.
