Peanut Butter Recalled After 30 Fall Ill in Texas and 18 Other States

Trader Joe's peanut butter has been linked to a Salmonella outbreak that has affected 30 people in 19 states, including Texas.

At least 20 of the victims are children under 10. Four of the victims have been hospitalized. The infections are linked to Trader Joe’s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter, but 76 other products have been recalled because of possible contamination with the enterobacteria Salmonella enterica serotype Bredeney.
Trader Joe's peanut butter is manufactured by Sunland Incorporated. The company has recalled all its peanut butter, peanut, almond butter, cashew butter, and tahini products. These include the brand names Archer Farms (Target), Dogsbutter, Earth Balance, Fresh & Easy, Harry & David, Heinen’s All Natural, Heinen’s Organic, Joseph’s, Natural Value, Naturally More, Open Nature, Peanut Power, Serious Food, Snaclite, Sprout’s, Sprout’s Farmer’s Market, Sugar Butter, Sunland, and Trader Joe’s. You can see the full list here.
The recall applies only to products with best-by dates between May 1, 2013, and Sept. 24, 2013. If you have any of these products, discard them immediately. Trader Joe’s is offering a full refund.
Salmonella enterica serotype Bredeney is a fairly uncommon strain of Salmonella. Symptoms of Salmonellafood poisoning begin 12 to 72 hours after the product is eaten and may include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping that lasts four to seven days. Salmonella poisoning is often be mistaken for the stomach flu. Young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems may develop a more serious illness that requires hospitalization.
This is not the first outbreak of Salmonella associated with peanut products. In 2008, 714 people in 46 states suffered Salmonella poisoning after eating the peanut butter in peanut butter crackers and similar products. In 2007, 425 people in 44 states became ill after eating Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter.
