Private Equity Firms & Elder Care

Many people mistakenly believe that most Texas nursing home abuse is the result of a few rogue staffers – isolated employees of the care facility that physically abuse the elderly during violent assaults. However, while nursing home staffers are a common source of elder abuse and neglect, many believe that one of the biggest underlying issues is the owner of the nursing home.

Privately owned homes vs. private equity firms

Could the quality of your elder loved one’s care be tied to who owns the nursing home where they reside? Some believe that the difference may be drastic. While some nursing homes are privately owned, others are owned by private equity investors – a collection of people who make short-term investments into a nursing home or group of nursing homes. Although the private nursing home owners often have a background in running the business and caring for the elderly, private equity firms often have little experience. What’s more, private equity firms are interested in buying poor nursing homes, flipping them, and quickly selling them for a profit – not in the general wellbeing of the residents.

A new study of nursing home ownership and care

Researchers at the University of Alabama are preparing to look into exactly what differences in care may exist between privately owned nursing homes and nursing homes owned by investors. The study will focus on nursing homes in five states, including Texas, and focus on three factors: nursing home ownership, financial success, and quality of care.
Many believe that nailing down the relationship between nursing home care and nursing home ownership is especially vital as more and more nursing homes are being bought by private-equity firm investments. According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the number of adult care facilities owned by private equity investors has increased sharply – with 1,800 of 16,000 homes now owned by investors.
