Wrongful Death and Unnecessary Surgeries

Thousands of surgeries are performed every day. However, an estimated 7.5 million unnecessary surgeries and procedures are performed each year. How can this happen to patients who need medical help? The answers may startle you.

Unnecessary Surgery

In the majority of these unnecessary surgeries, money played a major part. Performing these surgeries means higher profits. With each incision, patients are cut up in other ways besides with a scalpel. The amount of money generated in unnecessary surgeries is divided between the doctor and the hospital in which they operate.
So what are some of these unnecessary surgeries?
The Harvard University School of Public Health estimates that at least 1.3 million Americans suffer injuries sustained by this medical malpractice. Even more startling is that 7 out of 10 unnecessary surgeries are preventable. Here are a few examples of unnecessary surgeries individuals encounter during visits to the hospital from Consumer Reports on Health:

  • Hysterectomy - A procedure to remove the uterus, it's commonly performed to treat vaginal bleeding. It is also performed to extract benign fibroids. For persistent vaginal bleeding, one can try the nonsurgical endometrial ablation procedure. To remove fibroids, an alternate option is myomectomy surgery instead.
  • Knee Arthroscopy - Many hospital patients have this surgery done after twisting their knee. However, therapy, the proper medicine, and time can help heal this injury. If it doesn't affect your daily activities, surgery isn't necessary.
  • Gallbladder Removal - It helps remove a gallbladder that has formed painful stones. This can be avoided unless you had one severe attack or multiple less painful attacks in the upper right region of the abdomen. Make sure the pain isn't caused by bloating within the body.
  • Episiotomy - Used to strengthen the wall separating the vagina from the anus. Many doctors routinely administer this surgery on unsuspecting women who don't know they have a choice to have the surgery or not.  CNNHealth.com lists the benefits of exercising with Kegels.
  • Angioplasty - A surgical procedure to treat heart disease, it utilizes an inflated small balloon in the artery that helps open the arteries by pushing residue against the vessel wall. However, proper medication, exercise, and diet changes can do the same job as this unnecessary surgery.

There are many more unnecessary surgeries that can be avoided. The key is to be informed about all surgical procedures prior to hospital action.  If you feel like you or a loved one may have been the victim of a surgery mistake, contact our surgeon malpractice lawyers to discuss your situation.  You may be entitled to cash payments for your pain, suffering and loss of wages.  There is no cost and no obligation.
