Three years after a horrific bus accident in Sherman, Texas, eleven of the companies, people, and entities being sued in connection with the deadly crash have decided to settle with the families of those killed in the wreck.
The private, out-of-court wrongful death settlement involves a number of organizations implicated in the crash, including the bus company that operated the vehicle, the company that inspected the bus before the accident, and the company that was responsible for retreading the tire the blew, ultimately causing the accident.
The 2008 bus accident took place about an hour outside of Dallas on Highway 75 as a motor-coach filled with 55 Vietnamese Catholics made their way to a religious function. A tire was punctured and blew out on the road, causing the bus driver to lose control and drive into a bridge railing. The bus then toppled over the bridge and onto a road below, landing on its side. Seventeen people were killed in the accidents and many more were seriously injured.
An investigation revealed that the bus had been purchased by the bus company just two weeks before the accident and that no company has taken responsibility for placing the retreaded tire on the bus. Most of the companies who settled their wrongful death lawsuits this month out of court stressed that their settlement did not mean that they admitted responsibility for the wreck.
