Bayer's Mirena IUD and Skyla IUD have been linked to serious negative side effects. If you've suffered injury, we can help.

Contraceptive options come in all shapes and sizes, and one of the more-popular forms of birth control today is the hormonal intrauterine device (often referred to as an IUD or coil). These are small T-shaped devices which are implanted into a woman’s uterus to stop egg fertilization from occurring, and thus preventing pregnancy. That being said, these devices have come under scrutiny over the last decade due to the serious side effects linked to them.

Mirena Intrauterine Device (IUD)

Mirena IUD

Bayer Pharmaceuticals is at the helm of intrauterine devices in the US market, and the Mirena IUD (a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) is one of the most popular. The Mirena IUD works by releasing an artificial hormone over time (typically over a 5 year period). This hormone reduces over time, all the while remaining effective.

Levonorgestrel, a synthetic variant of progestin, works by thickening uterine mucous which then prevents sperm from fertilizing any egg the woman may have released. Unfortunately for many women, more and more very serious side effects have been linked to the Mirena IUD in recent years.

Here are some of the negative side effects, complications and injuries associated with the Mirena IUD:

  1. Uterine perforation. The Mirena IUD has been known to cause perforation or punctures in the cervix and/or uterine wall, which can permanently destroy tissue and lead to perforations in other organs.
  2. Migration. The device has been known to migrate from its original position and become embedded in the abdominal cavity, the pelvis, the bladder, and even blood vessels. This can cause intense pain, infection, bleeding, and organ damage.
  3. Cranial hypertension.
  4. Hysterectomy.
  5. Breast cancer.

It has been alleged that Levonorgestrel (the artificial hormone used in both the Skyla IUD and Mirena IUD) may make a woman more likely to contract breast cancer over the period of a couple of years. The study alleging this was published in the peer-reviewed journal Acta Oncologica in May of 2015, and it states that it puts women at an increased risk of developing both lobular and ductal breast cancer.

Skyla IUD

Bayer also has another IUD, known as Skyla, which was released into the market in 2013 (even when the FDA issued a warning over the Mirena IUD within the same timeframe). The device is very similar to the Mirena IUD, except is is slightly smaller, and is meant to be used for 3 years instead of 5. The side effects and dangers are generally the same as the Mirena, but one study showed an increased risk of developing ovarian cysts.

The FDA has reported over 45,000 adverse events connected to the Mirena and Skyla IUDs, and these numbers will likely grow as millions of women have IUDs implanted. Several hundred lawsuits have been filed, and we expect more women to come forward with stories of complications from these medical devices as awareness reaches fever pitch.

If you have used the Skyla or Mirena IUD and have suffered serious injury or complications as a result, it’s in your best interest to contact a Dallas IUD lawyer today to determine the legal options available to you.
