A single-engine 1946 Stinson 108 vintage airplane crashed in Dickens County on Sunday, killing the pilot of the aircraft as well as his two passengers, his parents. According to the Houston Chronicle, the pilot, 40-year-old Jake Jenkins of Lubbock, as well as 71-year-old Kirby Dan Jenkins and 68-year-old Dorothy Jenkins of Rockdale were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman Lynn Lunsford told reporters that the plane was scheduled to fly to a private airfield in Dickens to Rockdale that day – a distance of just over 350 miles. The wreckage was found when a man saw smoke billowing up from one of his fields early on Sunday afternoon. The FAA doesn’t know the cause of the Texas plane crash but an investigation is underway. While most aircraft crash investigations take months, experts say that the fog and low cloud cover present on Sunday morning could have been a factor in the fatal accident.
