There has been a great deal of controversy over the use of Risperdal or Invega. One of the more serious side effects of these two medications is the development of larger than normal breasts in boys and young men.
In addition to the enlargement of breast tissue, many males also produce excessive tissue in the glands. The growth usually starts as a small lump under the nipple; it may later become tender and over time will grow larger in size. Sometimes the condition can even cause males to produce breast milk.

Overview of gynecomastia.

When men and boys develop unnatural swelling in the breasts, the condition is known as gynecomastia. Most-frequently, the cause is an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone, and can affect only one breast or both, and not always evenly. The condition is not limited to any particular age group, and other factors can contribute as well.

Effects of gynecomastia.

While male breast enlargement does not present a threat to a person’s physical health, the condition may often cause both emotional and psychological damage to those who are affected. Dr. Brian Labow headed a study at Boston Children’s Hospital in April of 2013 in which researchers administered a series of psychological tests on boys with an average age of 16-1/2 years of age. The study showed the boys with gynecomastia scored lower in the areas of general health, mental health, social functions, eating behavior, and self-esteem than those boys who did not have the condition. They also discovered similar results in those who merely had mild to moderate breast enlargement, suggesting the results were similar regardless of the severity of the condition.
