National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day

March 25th is National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day!

The first time the country celebrated National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day was on March 25th of 2013. What you may not know is that the entire month of March is also National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month!
National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day was created due to the combined efforts of Reaching for the Stars and senators Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) and Bob Casey (D-Penn.), who introduced this resolution to the 112th Congress back in 2013.

Cerebral palsy facts.

Cerebral palsy (CP) refers to the existence of a problem with movement and posture that occur because of abnormalities within the brain. These abnormalities make it very difficult for patients to perform certain activities and are the most common cause of motor disorders in children in addition to being the second most common disability.

• CP affects in excess of 17,000,000 individuals throughout the world.
• Approximately 1 of every 303 children in the United States suffers from cerebral palsy.
• In eight out of ten cases of cerebral palsy, the specific cause for its development is unknown.
• The condition is not a disease nor contagious.
• Cerebral palsy does not get worse throughout a person’s lifetime.
• Not every cerebral palsy patient is confined to a wheelchair.

One of the big events of National Cerebral Palsy Month involves United Cerebral Palsy to encourage those with CP to share the things they enjoy and are capable of doing by using the hashtag #CerebralPalsyCan on social media. On March 25th, National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day, the UCP and the partners in this campaign will post videos on their social media channels and websites.
