Odessa, TX (February 12, 2023) – The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that 33-year-old Felipe Oviedo-Castillo was fatally injured in a truck accident involving multiple vehicles that occurred on Wednesday. On February […]
Dallas toddler Almariah Duque survived several successful transplant surgeries only to die on Wednesday, March 31 at Nebraska Medical Center because of an overdose of scrutinized blood thinner, Heparin.
This tragic death is a sad reminder of the medical mistakes that can turn a new lease on life into a devastating death, in a matter of minutes.
Almariah's parents, Kenya and Greggorio, had become accustomed to their pride and joy's frequent visits to the hospital. She had been in and out of the hospital since birth because of bad intestines. Her intestines were causing so many health problems that her doctor said she wouldn't live to see her second birthday without a transplant.
A transplant and a new chance at a long, helathy life,is what brought her from her home in Dallas to Nebraska. And by all accounts, she had received one. According to doctors, the transplant, what should have been the riskiest part of her hospital stay, went smoothly. It is the events that transpired after the surgery that are tragic, and avoidable.
Shortly after the surgery, Almariah developed an infection. Within two days, she was dead.
According to reports, it was not the infection that took her young life, but instead was an overdose of the drug thinner, Heparin. Basically, the drug watered down her blood, causing bleeding in the brain and subsequently her death.
When you hear a story like this, you can't help but hurt for the young parents and their loss; loss that appears to have been preventable by proper medical care. Care that Almariah and her family expected and deserved.
