Who is Liable for Your Texas Dog Bite Injuries?

When a Texas dog attack occurs, most people assume that the owner of the dog is the one responsible for damages. In most cases, this is true. However, there are some circumstances where someone else could be at fault or partly at fault for a Texas dog bite. Here are some examples:

  1. The dog sitter, dog walker, or someone else who is caring for the dog: In some cases the person who is caring for or controlling the dog may be responsible for a dog attack. This is often true if the caretaker was violating a local dog restraint law.
  2. The dog owner’s parents: If a dog owner is a minor, his or her parents may be held responsible for any dog bites.
  3. The owner of the property where the dog attack occurred: A property owner may be found partially responsible for a dog attack if he or she knew that a dangerous dog was on the property and yet did not take action to protect others from the dog.
  4. The dog bite victim. In rare cases, a dog bite victim may be found responsible for his or her own injuries. This can occur if the dog bite victim was trespassing, committing a crime, or was harming the dog.
