Know Who Has Contact With Your Child At Her Texas Daycare Center

This week we've been discussing the fact that daycare employees aren't the only possible child molesters at your Texas daycare center – your children could also be endangered by other employees of the building, other residents in an in-home daycare, and even older children who also attend the childcare center. While daycare owners, staff members, and employees must undergo background checks, what can you do to keep your children safe from others who may have contact with your kids?

  • Get a list of who will have access to your kids. Even before your children’s first day at the center, be familiar with everyone who will be at the center, from the daycare owner’s spouse to the groundskeeper. Ask specifically who will be around your kids.
  • Confirm a high level of supervision. If you child is being supervised well, he or she has a much lower chance of sexual abuse. Ask about how supervision is handled and what security is like.
  • Check the history of the daycare. Check if the daycare has any recent violations, and if so, what they were. Be wary of any childcare centers that have issues with supervision or with failing to complete background checks.
  • Drop in at random. Make some unannounced visits to your children. Who is supervising them, and who is present in the area? Is your child happy, occupied, and looked after? Are any children isolated? If your daycare isn't supportive of unannounced drop-ins, that’s a red flag on its own.

If your child has been the victim of sexual abuse at a Texas daycare, it is vital you know their legal rights and their rights to compensation.
