According to reports, the fatal accident occurred in the 1900 block of Interstate 20 (just underneath the New York Avenue bridge) Wednesday morning at about 2:30 a.m. Arlington police say that a 4-door Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on I-20 when it struck the rear of a tanker truck and veered into an SUV. Both the Accord and the SUV then left the roadway and crashed into the center median.
Rescuers arrived and worked to free four people trapped inside the two vehicles. The driver of the SUV, 57-year-old Elaine Plummer, was transported to Medical Center of Arlington but died a few hours later. The three occupants of the sedan (a man and two women) were transported to local hospitals in serious condition. At least one victim was taken to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth, and at least one more was taken to Medical Center of Arlington. The driver of the tanker truck was uninjured.
While no arrests have been made yet, investigators do believe that alcohol and speed were factors in the collision. Authorities have said that charges are expected to be filed.
