Children May Have Been Drugged at Daycare

A woman in Mississippi is being brought to trial for allegedly drugging children in a daycare center. The 52-year-old woman was working at the First Baptist Church Creative Learning Center when she is alleged to have provided two infants with muscle relaxants. The infants were aged four months old and seven months old at the time of the alleged drugging, according to reports in WLOX. The children were required to have emergency medical treatment, according to the report.
The woman is facing felony abuse charges due to the incident. The charges carry with them the threat of a one-year jail term and or $1,000 in fines.

There are children who do need medications and there are daycare facilities that are qualified to dispense them. This is not always the case, however, and there are instances where daycare workers are either negligent in how they provide medication or where they actually provide medications that are uncalled for. In the latter examples, medications may be used as a way to quiet children down when they become unruly. This, of course, is child abuse, negligence and, most importantly, it's potentially deadly to the children who were drugged.

Dangerous medical effects.

While criminal penalties will most certainly be leveled at anyone accused of abusing a child in any way, there may be other fallout from these instances, as well. A child who is drugged with prescription medications that they have not been prescribed may well end up suffering severe medical effects from the drug. In fact, pediatricians have to employ specialty knowledge when they figure out how much of any medication a child should be given. Giving a child an adult dose of any prescription medication is potentially deadly.

Beyond a criminal case.

Even though the abuser in the Mississippi case will face potential jail time, the parents also have the option to sue for money damages. A Dallas children's attorney can take a look at cases such as these and determine whether or not it would be worth your while to go forward with a civil lawsuit against the abusive facility or the abuser themselves. This may or may not be an option for your family but, if it is an option, it may provide you with enough money in compensation to pay for the fallout related to the abuse and to go forward and find a more suitable daycare provider and to be reimbursed for the money you spent on the negligent provider.
