Antique Cribs: One Heirloom that Should Not Be Passed Down

When Lara was a baby she slept in a beautiful, hand-carved oak crib that belonged to her grandmother. She was the oldest of five children, and each baby used the cradle in turn. One day Lara noticed that her youngest brother had caught his head between the bars. His face was turning red, so she lifted him out. Fortunately, he was fine. The family continued to use the cradle.
When Lara had children, her mother offered her the cradle. But, Lara remembered her brother and said no. Instead, she bought a new, rather boring crib at BabiesRUs.
Many families treasure the idea of using a crib or cradle that has been passed down through generations. But, antique and used cribs don’t meet modern safety standards and use of these cribs can lead to injury or even death.
An old crib is a beautiful and sentimental heirloom, but your child’s life is even more precious.
Our Dallas crib injury lawyers advise parents to buy a new crib that meets current safety guidelines when possible. If you must use a used crib, be sure that it meets the following crib safety standards:

  • There should be no missing or broken parts.
  • The mattress should be firm and tight-fitting. There should be no more than a two-finger gap between the crib and mattress.
  • There should be no more than 2-3/8" space between slats.
  • Any corner posts should be no more than 1/16" tall.
  • There should be no decorative cutouts on the crib.
  • Paint should be intact (with no peeling) and lead-free.
