Odessa, TX (February 12, 2023) – The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that 33-year-old Felipe Oviedo-Castillo was fatally injured in a truck accident involving multiple vehicles that occurred on Wednesday. On February […]
They're not the hot trend that they once were, but disciplinary boot camps aimed at children do still exist. These programs are generally aimed toward children with disciplinary and/or behavior problems, where the program concentrates on building self-esteem by instilling self-discipline. This is done by engaging in a lot of physical and mental challenges, and by basically rebuilding someone's identity to the point where they get more social skills out of it.
Unfortunately, there have been deaths at these camps, and some of them straddle the line between instilling discipline and outright child abuse. If your child has been victimized at one of these establishments, you do have options.
In cases where a criminal law has been broken, the authorities will handle that aspect of the situation. An attorney cannot compel a district attorney to bring criminal charges, but they can help you with a potential civil claim (e.g., a lawsuit seeking monetary compensation).
Some of the "counselors" at these establishments are really just glorified bullies. Even in the actual military, there are limits to what a drill sergeant can do as far as disciplining, insulting, and stressing enlistees. Remember, this isn't a military boot camp situation where people are being prepared for combat. Children never need to be mentally abused and there is no credible evidence that mental abuse of any kind instills good values in children.
Some children have physical limitations that make certain types of exercise dangerous for them. If one of these establishments has pushed your child so far that they've been injured—or worse—you may want to consider contacting an attorney about your family's options moving forward.
Sometimes, challenges help build us up. Sometimes, they break us. If you've entrusted your child with one of these establishments and there has been real harm done and real distress caused, you should definitely speak to an attorney.
A child abuse lawyer can help explain your options, as well as what to expect. While our firm generally focuses on child abuse in daycare settings, it doesn't mean that we won't bring the same skills to represent your family. Call us today at (214) 651-6100.
