Are CB Radios a Common Cause of Truck Accidents?

Do CB radios cause truck drivers to become distracted?

The federal government recently passed a new nationwide law that makes it illegal for commercial drivers to use handheld cell phones and mobile devices while driving. However, although truckers are now barred from text messaging and talking on a cell phone without a hands-free device, they are still allowed to use CB radios. Why is this?

Could CB radios be distracting for drivers?

Some safety experts believe that CB radios are indeed a distraction for commercial truckers. The radios require truckers to take their hand off of the wheel to change stations and to speak, while the act of talking and listening to the radio could take their minds off of the road. Those who support banning CB radios in truck cabs believe that the devices are just as distracting as talking on a cell phone.

The other side of the CB radio argument.

A recent study conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) found that talking on the CB radio does not create a significant distraction for truckers, especially compared with the distraction of locating, dialing, and talking on a cell phone. In fact, the study found that talking on the CB radio was only slightly more-distracting than talking on a hands-free device, and less-distracting than most other common issues (eating, using an on-board computer, texting, reaching for an object).
Truckers also argue that CB radios can actually help prevent truck accidents from taking place altogether, as truckers often give and receive warnings regarding construction zones, slowing traffic, and bad weather. This information allows truckers to avoid slick roads, heavy traffic, and even chain-reaction crashes.
While the debate continues about whether or not commercial truck drivers should be legally allowed to use hand-held CB radios, most truckers will continue to use the devices on a daily basis. Even though CB radios may be less distracting than other activities, ANY distraction could lead to an accident—even loud music. No matter what the cause of the distraction, you as a driver are liable for any damages and injuries you cause.
