CVSA Commercial Vehicle Roadcheck Shows Seatbelt & Logbook Violations

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conducted their yearly Roadcheck Campaign, a three-day program that promotes commercial driver education and protects against commercial vehicles violations. This year, the results were mixed: while general safety improved for commercial truck and bus companies, there is still much room for improvement and compliance.
Over 72 hours, the CVSA inspected over 70,000 large commercial vehicles in 2,550 locations across the country. All in all, roughly 81 percent of vehicles were in compliance with federal standards, while over 95 percent of drivers were in compliance.
What were some of the issues that drivers faced this year? The CVSA, a non-profit organization, reported a number of seat belt violations as well as log book violations. In fact, more than half of the violations for drivers centered on log book issues – federal safety violations that can lead to tired truckers, driver fatigue, and falling asleep at the wheel. As for vehicle violations, break, tire, and headlight issues were among the most common issues, along with under-the-radar trucks carrying household goods falsely operating as rental trucks.
Unfortunately, as you can see, five percent of drivers and twenty percent of commercial vehicles on the road today are violating safety standards. If you have been involved in a truck accident, it is vital that your crash is properly investigated to make certain that the commercial vehicle that struck you was not in violation of the law.
