While towns and governments around the country have turned their attention to distracted driving and mitigating its various causes, drunk driving remains a significant concern. In fact, about one-third of Americans will be […]
The family of Sonia Baker received well deserved justice today when former Fort Worth police officer Jesus Cisneros admitted to killing their daughter while driving intoxicated.
Cisneros took the stand this morning and during a 20 minute testimony changed his plea from innocent to guilty of intoxication manslaughter with a deadly weapon. The jury will now hear from the defense and their witnesses as they assess the punishment. Cisneros can face anywhere from 2 to 20 years in prison.
In his testimony, Cisneros admitted to driving under the influence and driving erratically the morning of December 11, 2009 when his car struck Baker's killing her instantly. Cisneros was moving at 76 mph in a 35 mph zone and had a blood alcohol level more than two times the legal limit.
This criminal trial is a major step for Baker's loved ones in their pursuit of justice. Cisneros killed their daughter while breaking the very laws that he was charged to enforce and uphold. While the outcome of his sentencing is yet to be determined, he will be held accountable for his grave actions.
The next step toward justice for the Bakers is their case against the establishment and those that enabled this dangerous and fatal behavior on the night of this tragedy. Dallas car crash attorneys at Rasansky Law Firm are representing the Baker family in their case against the Pour House in Fort Worth under Texas Dram Shop Laws. Under these laws, bars and other establishments have a responsibility to monitor their patrons and refuse to serve them when they are intoxicated. While it has been documented that Cisneros had been drinking and partying throughout the night, the Pour House was the last line of defense and provided the last alcohol that Cisneros drank before he got in his car and took the life of this young mother.
Those who take part in and enable this type of reckless and deadly behavior MUST be held accountable for their actions. Today, one of those, Cisneros, has.
