Deputy Charles Rivette was traveling as a passenger in the patrol car transporting an inmate when the SUV collided with the semi-truck. Rivette was ejected from the vehicle and was thrown onto the northbound lanes of the highway. A Ford F-150 pickup truck hit the deputy as he was lying on the roadway.
The patrol car was then hit by two more 18-wheelers. The driver of the patrol vehicle, 37-year-old Deputy James Frances, and the inmate were hospitalized for the treatment of sustained injuries. Rivette was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the truck drivers was also injured in the collision. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash is being handled by local law enforcement officials.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Deputy Charles Rivette at this time.
