Risk Factors During Pregnancy
- Maternal infections such as herpes simplex, rubella, or other viral/bacterial illnesses
- High blood pressure or preeclampsia
- Diabetes and thyroid disorders
- Exposure to untreated medical conditions that should be managed through prenatal care
Risks During Labor and Delivery
- Umbilical cord compression or prolapse leading to oxygen deprivation
- Placental abruption (premature detachment of the placenta)
- Prolonged or difficult labor without timely intervention (including delayed C-sections)
- Improper use of forceps or vacuum extractors causes head or brain trauma
While not every case of CP is preventable, early prenatal care, infection control, proper monitoring during labor, and timely medical intervention greatly reduce the risks. When preventable mistakes occur, the outcome may be considered medical negligence.
