The Dangers Of ATVs And All-Terrain Vehicles In Texas

This month we covered the story of a Texas teen who was seriously injured in an ATV accident. According to a local news station, the boy was going around a curve when the vehicle flipped, causing a severe head injury.
As the popularity of all-terrain vechiles, such as four-wheelers and three-wheelers, increases across Texas, the number of serious ATV accident injuries and ATV deaths is growing. While some blame reckless driving, drinking and driving, and speeding on many of these Texas ATV crashes, others believe that the ATV manufacturers are at least partially to blame. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that from 1982 to 2002, 5,239 people were killed while driving or riding on an ATV.
Because ATVs are relatively new vehicles, ATV companies still regularly deal with dangerous design flaws and other liability issues. Some ATVs have been prone to rollover accidents – accidents that often cause traumatic brain injuries or death because of a lack of protective roll bars on most vehicles. Others have reported dangerous ATV tire defects that cause serious accidents.
Other ATV safety advocates believe that a shocking lack of state-level regulation often leads to ATV accidents and injuries – most states do not require a license to ride an ATV, do not have helmet laws associated with ATV use, and allow children as young as 12 years old to operate ATVs.
