Vega, TX - Olin Hood Killed in Crash with Peterbilt on I-40

Vega, TX (February 28, 2023) - Two people were killed, and two others were injured following a multi-vehicle crash outside of Vega on Monday, February 27. 

The fatal accident was reported on Interstate 40 at around 7:40 a.m. Local reports revealed that 82-year-old Olin Hood of Ojai, California, was stopped on the interstate in a 2015 GMC Sierra pickup truck. It was then that a 2019 Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer driven by 37-year-old Cain Rangel-Ramirez of Bakersfield, California crashed into the rear of the pickup. 

It was then that a Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer driven by 31-year-old Frantz Maxi of Covington, Georgia crossed the center line and crashed into the semi-trailer of the Freightliner. The semi-trailer and the Freightliner overturned and caught fire due to the impact. 

Rangel-Ramirez and Hood were pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency personnel. Maxi and his passenger, 28-year-old Edwin Theodora of Lehigh Acres, Florida, were transported to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital for treatment. 

No further information has been provided. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly crash is underway.
