Semi-trucks and trains are two massive vehicles that are both capable of inflicting life-changing injuries in the event of a collision. According to statistics from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), there were 56,000 reported injury crashes involving trucks, and 79,000 people were injured in truck-combination accidents in 2017. The Bureau of Transportation reported that 1,848 of the accidents involved trains, with 57 people being hurt in 2019 alone.
Semi-trucks and trains both transport freight across the country, and both play a key role in the transportation system in the United States. It should come as no surprise that the resulting damage is often significant when these two massive vehicles collide. These collisions usually take place at railroad crossings. In most cases, they involve trucks that have not yet exited the track and is hit by the oncoming locomotive. You need to contact a trusted attorney if you or someone close to you is injured in a semi-truck crash involving a fast-moving train.
Like in other types of crashes, it is common for train conductors and truck drivers to blame each other. Trailers are often hit by oncoming trains, and training can play an important role in limiting these types of crashes. You need to be sure to partner with a trained personal injury lawyer ready to protect your rights after a serious collision.
