Texas Study Sheds Light on What Makes Intersections Dangerous

A new traffic accident study conducted by the University of Texas at Austin has produced a significant amount of new information regarding what makes some intersections safer and what makes others the scene of frequent Texas car accidents.
The report, which used car wreck data provided by the Texas Department of Transportation, revealed that a shocking 40 percent of car accidents take place at intersections. The researchers also found that intersections that feature blinking lights are more dangerous than those that only have a stop sign. In addition, the study found that improving the accident rate at one intersection can also reduce accidents along other parts of the same road – a totally new finding.
Not surprisingly, signaled intersections had the least number of crashes. Frontage road intersections had the highest number of crashes, possibly because of confusing road layouts or because cars are not slowing down enough after exiting freeways.
The findings of the study will be presented by researchers at the National Transportation Research Board Meeting.
