How To Deal With an Aggressive Driver

How to deal with aggressive and dangerous drivers.

Driving can become a risky affair if you’re confronted by an aggressive driver. This is especially true when the driver in question is behaving in an erratic and dangerous manner or showing signs of "road rage." In such situations, it’s easy to let your emotions take over, but it's important for you to try and control the situation. However, you should never try to confront an aggressive driver.

Aggressive driving manifests itself in different ways, and we all know aggressive driving when we see it. Here are a few examples:

  1. Honking the car horn excessively and continuously.
  2. Driving above the speed limit.
  3. Cutting off other drivers.
  4. Tailgating or flashing one’s lights at another driver.
  5. Disregarding traffic signs or red lights.
  6. Not stopping or slowing down at school crossing zones.

Most states take driving offences very seriously. On top of fines, some states may even impose jail time in certain aggressive driving situations. Aggressive driving arrests and convictions may also lead to suspension of your drivers license, and changes in your insurance policy terms.
If you’re confronted by an aggressive driver or a road rage driver, call the police immediately. If you're in the left lane and someone wants to pass, move over and let the driver pass you. If confronted while stopped, do not get out of your vehicle. The Texas Department of Transportation recommends that you do not make eye contact with the aggressive driver. Doing so will not calm the situation. At the same time, confronting such a person may implicate you in charges, so it’s usually a good idea to keep a distance until authorities arrive at the scene. If you’re followed, ensure that you go to a public place with lots of people and call the police immediately.
