ACU Student Suffers Brain Injury in Scooter Accident

A sophomore from Abilene Christian University has been seriously injured in a scooter-car collision near campus. The student remains in intensive care and in a coma while doctors are debating a brain surgery.
According to the Abilene News-Reporter, 26-year-old Justin Allen Gibson was riding a 2008 Honda scooter on North 10^th Street at about 2:40 p.m. on Friday, March 30, when he was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Pine Street. Authorities say that the scooter was struck as a vehicle headed west and turned left in front of the student. It is unclear if Gibson was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, though initial evidence suggests he had the right of way when the collision took place.
The social work major’s girlfriend, Melissa Mason, has been updating family and friends regarding Gibson’s condition on a personal blog. Gibson initially went to Hendrick Medical Center before being transferred to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. While doctors were at first questioning the young man’s survival, his vital signs have improved and his oxygen levels have gone up to 100 percent. However, his brain continues to swell and his right side seems affected by his brain damage.
